i was on a houseboat recently - not far from that one in the picture, actually. it was in seattle's particularly chilly and rainy phase in early january, and the night was quite black. the roads were black, the sidewalks were black, the docks were black...and the water was black. looked a bit like a puddle on a dark road, really.
leaving the houseboat, though - that was the trick. i tried to remember which way the docks turned to get back to the ramp and my car, and as i looked at the (forgive me) sea of black i thought, "now wouldn't it be awful if, on the eve of my interview, i walked off the program director's dock into the water?"

That looks so nice. We should all retire there like the Golden Girls and live out our days playing cribbage and making brownies.
