Thirty Days

Have September, April, June, and November. All the rest have thirty-one. Except February, it has twenty-eight.

do you know the knuckle trick for knowing the days of the month? make a fist. your pointer finger knucle is january. the dip between pointer and middle is february. middle knuckle is march, and etc. after july pikey knuckle, jump to august pointer finger knuckle again and repeat. knuckles are higher, so they're 31 days. dips are lower, so they're 30 days (or, um, 28... or 29...). fun stuff.

I too know the knuckle trick, but with a slight variation. instead of going back to the pointer finger for August, when I get to the end (July) I just tap it (the aforementioned 'pikey' knuckle) again for August and then work my way back. The rhyme never made any sense to me, but fingers... I get fingers.

i've also seen people put two hands together and go from hand to hand in order to get the two-31-day-months in a row...

so, i was always weirded out by the fact that the little rhyming thing ("30 days hath...") stops rhyming when you get to the bit about February. So I looked it up. And apparently there are versions that rhyme. Or have approximate rhyme (or whatever it's called when the spelling makes it look like it should rhyme, but the sounds don't actuall rhyme).

PS - When I went to visit Cecil at Brown, I got to go to one of her lit classes. And the professor talked about the definition of "rhyme" for 60 minutes. It was amazing. :)
